Leek Microgreens: A Superfood & Popular With Chefs

Leek Microgreens: A Superfood & Popular With Chefs

Leek microgreens are young leek plants. Related to onions, garlic, shallots, and scallions, this superfood is popular with chefs. They add a mild onion flavor and a neat visual touch to dishes. We can grow these for you at your request.

The stems are thin and green, often with small black seed hulls still attached. The hulls are edible but can be brushed off if you prefer.

Health Benefits of Leek Microgreens

Leek microgreens are nutritious. They contain several vitamins and minerals such as Vitamins A, B6, C, E, K, folate, iron, potassium, magnesium, and small amounts of omega-3s. Eating them adds flavor and nutrients to meals.

Culinary Uses

Leek Microgreens on Cutting Board | Aquaganix Depot

Use them fresh as a garnish or ingredient: sprinkle on salads, sandwiches, soups, or main dishes to add mild onion flavor. Here’s a recipe.

Grilled Ham & Cheese With Leek Microgreens, Apple and Dijon

Ingredients:

  • 1-2 tablespoon of butter
  • 2 slices of brioche bread
  • 4 slices of ham
  • 6 thin slices of brie cheese
  • 6 thin slices of apple
  • 1 small handful of leek microgreens
  • 1 tablespoon of whole grain mustard

Directions:

First, heat pan to medium heat and then add the butter. Next, let the butter melt and then swirl to coat the bottom of the pan. Then add the 2 slices of brioche to the pan. Next you’ll want to, place the brie cheese and ham on top of each slice. Then cook the brioche until the brie begins to melt and the bread is golden. The next step is to top one slice of the brioche with apple slices, mustard and leek microgreens. Then flip the other slice of brioche on top. Lastly, transfer to a plate and cut the sandwich in half.
