In the beginning . . .
Our family farm journey to growing nutrient-rich, pesticide-free produce began in 2011. At first, our family began selling home-grown watermelons to help our daughters earn money for school. Subsequent melon seasons attracted more customers. Gradually, this natural farming venture grew to involve additional family members, friends, acreage, equipment, and melon varieties.
Today, our daughters are busy with their own lives. Our year-round growing season now offers microgreens and other produce in our greenhouse and eggs from our mobile hen house. Our outdoor farm offers seasonal melons, berries, and poultry. Sharon’s sister, Gail, and Gail’s husband, Matt, jumped in to partner with us. So this remains very much a family effort.
How did we end up with a greenhouse in addition to our outdoor farm?
We developed an indoor vertical farm – a compact greenhouse and facility. This helps us grow natural produce all year. We utilize hydroponics, and have coupled it with aquaculture for certain crops (aquaponics).
Much research and planning went into this project. Along the way, our busy daughters contributed in the field and in the construction. We made new friends and together we learned plenty. Feel free to follow the various stages of this project through the Follow Our Greenhouse link.
